Working Through The Holidays

Many of us find ourselves needing to work through the holidays. You´re not alone if you find yourself in this position where you are working during Christmas, New Year´s or even other holidays throughout the year. While no one really wants to work while others are taking time off and enjoying fun with the family and friends, there are some professions and some situations that must call for it. But just because you are required to work during the holidays does not mean it has to completely take over your festivities.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when working through the holidays:

  • Do you have a choice of whether or not to work this holiday?
  • Have you weighed the pros and cons of working on this holiday?
  • If you must work, have you planned alternative holiday celebrations around the times that you are working?
  • Do you still allow yourself a chance to enjoy the festivities?
  • Have you created a work schedule so that the work you must do does not completely overrule the time you need with family and friends?
  • Can any of the work be delegated or outsourced to anyone else?
  • Have you made sure not to over commit yourself (volunteering to host parties or events when you have work, etc)?

Now that you have these tips, you can apply them to your own life. Remember that time is short and while work is important to most of us who depend on it for a living, there are times when it is vital to rest as well. Be sure to take care of yourself and your family and get the breaks you need.
