Simple Pirate Costume Ideas

Whether you are a fan of Captain Jack Sparrow, the Jolly Roger, treasure, peg legs, parrots, or having a hook for a hand, a pirate costume can be a lot of fun for Halloween, a bachelor´s party, or other special occasion. Pirates date back as far as the 13th century BC with the "sea people" of the Aegean and Mediterranean. They are a classic symbol of rebellion and anarchy and can be a really fun costume.
Clothing for Pirate Costumes
The clothes are obviously a key component of your costume. Here are some of the basics:
- Pants - Pirate pants are generally black, although other colors may work as well, depending on the rest of your outfit. Tight pants work well for both men and women, but if tight isn´t a look you can pull off, you can also go with baggy cut-offs. If going the baggy route, cut off the bottom of your pants just below the knee. Cut in a zigzag or uneven pattern in order to give your pants and aged feel.
- Skirts- For women who would like to dress up as a pirate but would rather not wear pants, a skirt can work as well. Long peasant-style or short and sexy skirts can both work well. As with pirate pants, you may want to make your skirt look a bit old and tattered. Before you start cutting, just be certain that you don´t need to wear the skirt again for anything other than a costume.
- Shirts - Generally a long-sleeved "blousy" or peasant style shirt works best. The baggier the better and large cuffs and/or ruffles work great, (even for men).
- Vests- Black or red vests or vests with vertical stripes work well. Again, you may want to make the vest look a bit tattered and aged.
- Pirate Costume Accessory Ideas:
- Hook Hand - generally available at costume shops and online
- Big Black Boots - brown may also work, depending on the rest of your outfit
- A Wide Belt or Sash - especially if you are going with tight pants
- Pirate Hat - although a bandanna can also work
- Sword - plastic or other non-dangerous material preferred
- Hoop Earrings - if you don´t have pierced ears, you may be able to find clip-ons
- Skull or Skull-and-Crossbones jewelry
- Long Black or Dark Brown Wig (unless you already have long hair)
- Beads and other bobbles for your hair
A fun activity to do while you´re dressed up in your pirate costume is to pass out toy gold coins or jewelry. At certain times of year, you can also find chocolate "gold coins." Don´t forget your hearty pirate laugh.
