Tee Off From Oahu Vacation Rentals For The Golfing Adventure Of A Lifetime

Santa And Gift

Oahu vacation rentals are your gateway to the golfing adventure of a lifetime! Take a look at some of the great courses Oahu offers:

Ala Wai Municipal Golf Course - The Guinness Book of World Records lists this as the busiest golf course in the world; some 500 rounds a day are played on this 18-hole municipal course within walking distance of Waikiki´s hotels. Ala Wai basically is a flat layout, bordered by the Ala Wai Canal on one side and the Manoa-Palolo Stream on the other. It´s less windy than most Oahu courses, but pay attention to the 372-yard, par-4, 1st hole which demands a straight and long shot to the very tiny green.

Hawaii Kai Golf Course is actually two golf courses in one. The par-72, 6,222-yard Hawaii Kai Championship Golf Course is moderately challenging, with scenic vistas. The course is forgiving to high-handicap golfers, although it does have a few surprises. The par-3 Hawaii Kai Executive Golf Course is fun for beginners and those just getting back in the game after a few years. The course has lots of hills and valleys, with no water hazards and only a few sand traps. Lockers are available.

Ko Olina Golf Club was named by Golf Digest named one of "America´s Top 75 Resort Courses" in 1992. This 6,867-yard, par-72 course designed by Ted Robinson has rolling fairways and elevated tee and water features. The signature hole - the 12th, a par-3 - has an elevated tee that sits on a rock garden with a cascading waterfall. Wait until you get to the 18th hole, where you´ll see and hear water all around you - seven pools begin on the right side of the fairway and slope down to a lake. Facilities include a driving range, locker rooms, Jacuzzi, steam rooms, and a restaurant and bar. Lessons are available.

Located near Kailua vacation rentals, the Pali Golf Course is a beautiful municipal course sits near Kaneohe, just below the historic spot where King Kamehameha the Great won the battle that united the islands of Hawaii. The par-72, 6,494-yard course, designed by Willard G. Wilkinson and built in 1953, makes use of the natural terrain (hills and valleys make up the majority of the 250 acres). The course does not have man-made traps, but a small stream meanders through it. If you´re off line on the 9th, you´ll get to know the stream quite well. The challenge here is the weather -- whipping winds and frequent rainsqualls. Because of the potential for rain, you might want to pay for 9 holes, and then assess the weather before signing up for the back 9. The views include Kaneohe Bay, the towns of Kailua and Kaneohe, and the verdant cliffs of the Koolau Mountains. Facilities include practice greens, club rental, locker rooms, and a restaurant.

Makaha Resort Golf Club is a challenging course - recently named "The Best Golf Course on Oahu" by Honolulu magazine. It sits some 45 miles west of Honolulu, in Makaha Valley. Designed by William Bell, the par-72, 7,091-yard course meanders toward the ocean before turning and heading into the valley. Sheer volcanic walls tower 1,500 feet above the course, which is surrounded by swaying palm trees and neon-bright bougainvillea; an occasional peacock will even strut across the fairways. The beauty here could make it difficult to keep your mind on the game if it weren´t for the course´s many challenges: 8 water hazards, 107 bunkers, and frequent brisk winds. Facilities include a pro shop, bag storage, and snack shop.

Mililani Golf Club is a par-72, 6,455-yard public course which is home to the Sports Shinko Rainbow Open, where Hawaii´s top professionals compete. Located between the Koolau and Waianae mountain ranges on the Leilehua Plateau, this is one of Oahu´s most scenic courses, with views of mountains from every hole. Unfortunately, due to lots of views of trees, it´s a lesson in patience to stay on the fairways and away from the trees. The two signature holes, the par-4 number 4 (a classic middle hole with water, flowers, and bunkers) and the par-3 number 12 (a comfortable tee shot over a ravine filled with tropical flowers that jumps to the undulating green with bunkers on each side) are so scenic, you´ll forgive the challenges they pose.

Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu´s North Shore resort is home to two of Hawaii´s top golf courses. The 18-hole Arnold Palmer Course (formerly the Links at Kuilima) was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Turtle Bay used to be labeled a "wind tunnel"; it still is one, though the casuarina (ironwood) trees have matured and dampened the wind somewhat. But Palmer and Seay never meant for golfers to get off too easy; this is a challenging course. The front 9, with rolling terrain, only a few trees, and lots of wind, play like a British Isles course. The back 9 have narrower, tree-lined fairways and water. The course circles Punahoolapa Marsh, a protected wetland for endangered Hawaiian waterfowl.
