Champagne For Christmass

Red white and blue stripes traveled down the center of a clean paved road near the bay. Patient onlookers held their personal spaces - and their flags - along with lawn chairs, blankets and strollers occupied by little restless spectators. I seemed to always in the same spot every time this time of year Memorial Day.

I never remembered bringing a chair to relax in. You would never be able to see anyway if some large body were blocking your view. Restless crowds now grew larger as the sidewalk seemed to get smaller. After an endless wait you hear the faint sound of trumpets and snare drums off in the distance. I knew exactly where they were coming from. Just beyond the decorated patriotic roadway was an old brick high school. That is where the parade congregated and set out to begin their march. What a sight and sound to behold! I loved the loud and beautiful noise from the musical instruments and the pounding of the big drums stomping by. I had always wanted to twirl a baton like that so high in the air and catch it as it twirls down. I wonder if the girls were cold in their bare leggings with just skin tight leotards on their legs.

The neighboring schools strolled by each with their own hand-held banners and spirited songs. Local area police officers rode high upon huge handsome horses and galloped so proudly. Beyond the stream of stallions followed with several police cars in tow. Marching bands, smiling clowns, funny little cars and big ones too streamed by my path and filled the air with life and sound. At the end of all the excitement came screaming fire engines with sirens to pronounce the finish to a quite wonderful bit of entertainment! The crowds broke and people dispersed in every direction. I found myself quietly strolling back home down my long street.

It was relaxing to think about the sights I had just seen and remember the wonder and all the excitement and fun there was in that moment. I have never forgotten what Memorial Day means to me. The remembering of all our troops in the past and in the present. Remembering what they have sacrificed foe us all. Protecting us and keeping us free.
