Holidays: Add A Touch Of Calm And Serenity

Christams Lady

Amid the frenzy of the season, we all need some calm, some moments of peace and quiet. This is not an impossibility.

Give some thought to what is needed to create an aura of serenity to complement and enhance the season.

It's not the blaring sound of Christmas songs, nor an overflow of sweets and treats. It is as simple as having a good supply of candles, incense and aromatic oils or potpourri pot.

This is a bit difficult for those who have pets and small children. Surely, you can find a way around this, even just for an evening.

Candles now come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors and scents. There is no need for fancy candle holders if you don't have them. Be creative, explore the variety of probable candleholders. An empty jar can be filled with water and placed at different locations in the living area. A wine glass would look attractive. Use a tumbler for variety.

A salad bowl lined with colored stones at the bottom and filled with water makes a good base for a few candles to float. A few colored petals or green leaf floating with the candles can be mesmerizing. In keeping with the season, set this bowl amid garlands, accent with extra candle holders using multicolored candles. Or use the season's colors of red, green, or gold candles.

Candles are easy to work with and offer such versatility it is a delight to have them light up an area. Be creative.

Add a few drops of aromatic oil before lighting the candles . As the wax melts, it disperses the aroma into the atmosphere.

Set a bowl of your favorite potpourri, let it simmer and enjoy the aroma as it fills the air. Burn an incense if you don't have the potpourri pot.

Incense can also fill a room with aroma. I find the incense sold on ebay and dipped in oil lasts longer and the scent is more subtle than the chemical based ones.

Tidbit: Bayberry is the recommended scent for Christmas. It is believed to bring good luck.

If you are entertaining, leave some lit candles in the washroom, in the hallway and any place that takes your fancy.

Remember safety rules when using candles, incense or potpourri pot. Keep them at a safe distance from flammable materials. Please do not leave these unattended.

Teach the young ones to observe safety measures. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Keep the lights low, the music soft, gaze at the candles, enjoy a whiff of an incense burning, or the smell of aromatic oil. Take in a few deep breathes and savor the peace and calm.
