Grand Teton National Park - The Gem Of The West

Most people don´t know this, but the Jackson Hole Airport is the only airport located inside a national park with regular airline service! I have flown there many times over the last 25 years and have enjoyed every landing, every scene and every activity.

Grand Teton National Park is located about 4 miles north of the town of Jackson, Wyoming. If the pioneers of the 1850´s had seen this area first they may never have made Oregon or Salt Lake City.

The Grand Teton towers above all mountain peaks in the area. It reaches an altitude of 13,780´ above sea level and is known as the "youngest" mountain in the Rockies. Rising over a vertical mile from the valley floor and standing as sentinel beside the famous Snake River, this area is home to "America´s Serengeti."

Very few areas in North America are more environmentally protected with 97% of all land area in Teton County being under either federal control or under the control of private conservation organizations.

Wildlife is abundant and includes all the varmints, critters and big game of the wild west.

There is an area directly east of the Grand Teton that is inside the park next to Highway 89 known as Antelope Flats. Go east from 89 at Moose along the base of Blacktail Butte.

Most drive past this part of the park not knowing that one of the largest and most viewable buffalo herds roams freely. You will find the herd gathered around the Moulton Barn (the most photographed barn in the world with the Grand Teton in the background) in the area known as Mormon Row. Oft-times you are in the middle of the herd as they cross the road seeking additional grazing rights.

Please stay in your vehicle when buffalo approach. They are NOT tame! If you make them mad, they will pick you up and throw you wherever they like. They may even damage your car if they don´t like you!

There are a handful of private residences on the bluff that overlook the sharp upslope foothills in the shadow of the Grand Teton. Lucky them! They are the last remaining private properties surrounded by Grand Teton National Park.

If you are looking for wildlife, adventure, the wild west and natural beauty this must be on your list! Lodging is relatively inexpensive and the summers are cool and comfortable.

Don´t forget to bring a jacket for sitting in the shade. The down slope leeward breezes can bring on a chill if you are not prepared!
