Flights - Crete, An Introduction

Christmas 022

Crete is Greece´s largest and most southern island, and from the highly commercialised northern region to the tranquil natural beauty of the east and west coast - Crete holds an abundance of holiday treasures, just waiting to be discovered.

A trip to Crete is likely to start in the islands capital, Heraklion or Iraklion, situated on the northern coast. Heraklion has become heavily commercialised as Crete´s popularity has increased, and today it is a busy city - full of hotels, restaurants, shops and traffic.

The city´s main square, Venizelou Square or "Lion Square" is lined with designer shops, bars and small restaurants, with numerous interesting shops situated on the smaller roads branching off from here.

One of the city´s main attractions is the Archaeological Museum, which houses all of the finds from the surrounding Archaeological sites such as Knossos and Archanes; the museum is also the world´s most comprehensive collection of such artefacts.

Venturing south from the city you will come across the Minoan Palace of Knossos, home to Palace of Knossos, The Minoan Houses, the Little Palace and the Royal Villa.

The original palace dates back to 2,000 BC and has lived a treacherous life, being the victim of numerous earthquakes that have broken it down considerably over the years. Today The Palace and the Minoan houses are open for visits and are a must-see for any Cretan holiday.

East from Heraklion is Crete´s largest holiday resort - the city of Agios Nikolaos, an excellent hub for exploring the eastern region of the island.

Although the city does not offer the same major monuments commonplace in other Cretan cities it possesses a unique charm. The city has a perfect blend of high-class cosmopolitan bars, restaurants and accommodation set on the beautiful coastline of the calm, inspiring waters of Mirabello Bay.

If you venture away from the crowds, beaches and resorts and head inland into the countries mountainous countryside you will discover the true beauty of Crete - with hiking being one of the best ways to explore the island.
