Are You Ready For The New Year

Christams Lady 2

"The king is dead; long live the king!" So the old year is old. It is time to think about what the New Year will bring us next.

Let's think of the words of the great John Lennon... "So this is Christmas/And what have you done/Another year over/And a new one just begun."

And now let's make an assessment of our past year. What have we done?

Evaluations are always good because if we don't know where we have been we will certainly not know where we are going to. And how can we dream of better things for the New Year if we don't know what our nightmares have been in the old year?

For an objective self-evaluation, I suggest we divide our deeds in 4 categories and then, subdivide them in 3 others so we will have a total of 12. These categories are no better than others. They are not worse either. They were chosen because they encompass the things our human nature values the most and hence they will direct us to fulfill our greatest desires.

  1. Relationships: life partner, friends, family
  2. Prosperity: finances, business and/or job, possessions
  3. Health: weight management, nutrition, exercise
  4. Lifestyle: recreation and fun, culture and travel, self-growth and spirituality

Then, for each category, we will write the positives and the negatives that occurred during the old year. What are we proud of and what do we "regret," meaning, how can we do better?

So, here are some examples:

  1. Family: you haven't called or visited your parents as much.
  2. Life Partner: you could have been a little more loving.
  3. Children: you haven't paid too much attention to their accomplishments.
  4. Finances: you spent too much money eating out.
  5. Health: you haven't eaten nutritious food in a while
  6. Culture: you haven't been to a museum or a concert
  7. Spirituality; haven't read anything inspiring And so on.

Remember that we learn to regret the things we haven't done? So, the next step is to forgive yourself for what you see were your shortcomings. After you have listed all of them, say to yourself: "(your name), I forgive you and bless you. I do not wish to take these shortcomings into the New Year. Now let's go on with life, shall we?"

Now, it is time to burn your list. As you do so, send it to the corners of the earth and ask that its energy nourish the planet. Now, it is time to make your resolutions.

Think about the 12 items again and decide how you can do better. Assume the responsibility for your life and how it is unfolding. Write down what you can do to better your circumstances.

If you want to know how to write a great New Year's Resolution list, please, check my article on this subject.

This one list you keep, so later on you can look at it and appreciate how much you have improved. Next year, repeat the process.

Happy New Year!
